We’re looking for volunteers to help Bloomfield achieve Sustainable Jersey certification. We need people interested in short-term tasks and people that want to take on coordination of an entire action that will earn points toward certification. We’ll provide a description of what needs to be done and documented.  Here are some actions we’re targeting where we need help:

  • Anti-idling program
  • Community education and outreach activities
  • Project Porchlight (handing out CFLs and getting people to sign change-a-light pledges)
  • Community gardening
  • Buy Local program
  • Green business recognition program
  • Community asset mapping
  • A water conservation ordinance
  • Green building guidelines
  • …or something else of your choosing!

If you have additional ideas or opinions, or if you’d like to work on any of these projects, please add a Comment! We’ll collect these ideas and begin prioritizing them and assigning workgroups to get them implemented.

Local Government/Business Greenstorm Ideas

  • Sustainability Coordinator
    • Possibly as a shared service between neighboring municipalities?
  • Explore shared services with neighboring communities
    • Possible cost reductions with volume
    • Access additional services others are using
    • Examples: Recycling, composting, biodiesel and other alternative fuels
  • Recycling education and enforcement
    • Important to get businesses recycling
    • Needed for entire community to increase % waste recycled
  • Improved vehicle fuel efficiency
    • Eliminate excessive/unnecessary idling
    • Consider having a departmental incentive/award for best fuel mileage increase each month
    • Encourage new vehicle purchases to be hybrid/electric and other high-mpg, low-emissions
