Project Porchlight

Thirty-five volunteers spread out across Bloomfield on August 15 in sweltering heat, delivering free energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs to 1,650 households as part of a Project Porchlight blitz. That many bulbs will result in $50,000 in energy savings, 544.5 tons CO2 emissions prevented of entering the environment, and 94 cars removed from the road in the form of Green House Gases(GHG)!

  • Please sign our Change A Light pledge! We need over 1,200 signatures to qualify for a Sustainable Jersey challenge action worth 10 points toward the 100 points needed for certification.

Replacing a standard 60 watt bulb with a 13 watt CFL gives the same amount of light, and it will use about 1/5 the energy and last up to 7 times longer than a standard incandescent bulb. An LED light will cost more, but it will save even more energy and last even longer, and it does not contain mercury. (Note: CFLs do contain a small amount of mercury, which can be toxic if ingested. Do not throw them in the garbage. You may recycle used CFLs at Home Depot.)

You can also get general information on Project Porchlight and information on CFLs from the Project Porchlight website.
