Greener Bloomfield is a group of dedicated volunteers who have organized to promote responsible environmental management within the township of Bloomfield and to help build a sustainable community. We are Bloomfield’s “Green Team,” working in cooperation with the municipality and voluntarily affiliated with the state-wide Sustainable Jersey program.
Sustainable Jersey began in 2009 as a collaborative effort between the NJ State League of Municipalities Mayor’s Committee for a Green Future and the Municipal Land Use Center at the College of New Jersey, in partnership with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection and NJ Board of Public Utilities. Its purpose has been to provide tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they strive to reduce waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve environmental equity. Sustainable Jersey is a program of support for municipalities attempting to lighten their carbon footprint and move citizens toward wiser environmental choices. It provides a structure and a strategy for achieving goals. Communities can become certified at two levels of achievement – bronze and silver. Sustainable Jersey also awards grant money to towns that demonstrate continued advancement in sustainable initiatives.
By affiliating with Sustainable Jersey, Greener Bloomfield has been able to draw on the experience of many others across the state. In 2015 we were recertified at the bronze level. We also applied for and received a $2000 grant under Sustainable Jersey’s small grants program, funded in 2015 by PSE&G, to increase our public outreach. Again in 2017 we achieved Bronze certification. And in 2018 received a $10,000 grant from PSEG & Sustainable Jersey for composting projects and reducing food waste in our garbage collection.
Across New Jersey, hundreds of towns are working on sustainability programs, realizing that this work improves a community’s quality of life. Communities are implementing solar power and wind turbine projects, educating on rain capture and re-use, and setting up walking and biking programs. They are establishing community food gardens, conducting outreach on recycling and energy conservation, and working on dozens of other initiatives. The efforts of Greener Bloomfield are an attempt to bring a new focus to the possibilities that exist within the township for a healthier environment that goes beyond the borders of Bloomfield.
