First Meeting Generates Excitement, Ideas

A bigger-than-anticipated group of 30 people attended the first Greener Bloomfield Public Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 6. After some basic discussion of the origins and expectations for Greener Bloomfield, the group shared their interests and experiences in going green, both personally and for the community. The group split into workgroups to generate lists of project ideas under the categories of Homes, Schools, and Local Government & Business. For those that attended, what did you think? Please comment!

The enthusiastic gathering included a broad range of people interested in the environment, from renters to homeowners, students to senior citizens, newcomers to life-long denizens, those looking for ideas to those who have done quite a bit, and people involved in a variety of businesses. All seemed excited to connect with so many other like-minded neighbors and learn from each other.

Consensus seemed to be that Greener Bloomfield should form as a non-profit organization to keep it independent, insulated from politics, and able to raise funds and do direct work in the community. Many people agreed with the main objectives of the group, which we’ll detail later. They particularly emphasized a connection with town government to suggest green policies and practices, and outreach and education to help others learn how they can be greener.

We’ll write more about the breakout session project ideas in later posts. Many thanks to all who participated! And for those that couldn’t be there, we’ll continue to use this website and email to communicate, and we’ll meet again in a few weeks.
